The Wonderful World of Ben: a warm and joyful picture book about learning beyond the classroom

Every now and then a book arrives that makes you pause and think, I wish this had existed when my children were small. This is one of those books. The Wonderful World of Ben is a rhyming children’s picture book about home education, written by Lorraine Blanche and illustrated by Tina Gedney.

💚 Lorraine kindly sent me a copy of her book to read so I could share my honest thoughts. I only ever feature resources that I genuinely believe are ideal for home educating families.

At its heart, this is a simple story about a child whose experience of school is full of worry and overwhelm. The noise, the crowds, the pressure to sit still and keep up. Many families will recognise those feelings immediately. Lorraine captures that quiet anxiety with real care and understanding. But this is not a heavy story. It quickly opens the door to something hopeful.

When Ben’s parents decide to try home education, the tone shifts. The world becomes his classroom. Learning begins to happen through everyday life. Baking turns into maths. Meeting firefighters sparks curiosity. Music becomes exploration and joy. The message is clear but gently delivered. Learning does not only happen in classrooms.

What I particularly enjoyed is the playful rhyming style. The rhythm moves the story along beautifully, making it ideal for reading aloud. It feels lively and warm rather than preachy, which means children can simply enjoy the story while absorbing the idea that learning can happen in many different ways.

The illustrations by Tina Gedney bring the whole book to life. They are colourful, expressive and full of movement. Each page feels inviting and energetic, capturing Ben’s growing confidence and curiosity as his world opens up.

Children’s books that reflect home educating families are still surprisingly rare in the UK. Most titles come from the United States and use the term ‘homeschooling’, which doesn’t always resonate with British families. That is part of what makes books like The Wonderful World of Ben so welcome.

In the current climate, books that present a positive and thoughtful picture of home education matter. Families often struggle to find children’s stories that reflect their lives or validate different ways of learning. Lorraine has created something that fills that gap with kindness and optimism.

At the same time, this is simply a genuinely engaging children’s picture book. You do not need to be a home ed family to enjoy it. The story celebrates curiosity, creativity and learning through experience, values that sit at the heart of good education in any setting.

It is also clearly written from real lived experience. Lorraine began writing stories for her own son after struggling to find books that reflected school anxiety and alternative learning paths. That authenticity shines through in the story.

For those of us who have been walking this path for years, The Wonderful World of Ben feels like a small but meaningful addition to the growing collection of home education voices. And honestly, I cannot help wishing a book like this had been on our shelves when my boys were little.

It would have been read many times.

The Wonderful World of Ben  is available in all major book retailers.
