Taking home education to sea with Morning Star Trust

Have you ever thought about taking home education to sea?

For many young people, sailing offers something that is hard to recreate on land: real responsibility, practical learning, teamwork, problem-solving, and the chance to see the world from a completely different perspective.

Morning Star Trust is a Christian sail training charity that invests in young people through immersive, hands-on sailing experiences. We provide opportunities for young people to develop confidence, character, independence, and practical skills while living and learning at sea.

Home ed can open the door to a wide range of learning opportunities, and we would love to be a resource for home educating families. A boat can become a rich learning environment, where young people can explore navigation, coastal geography, teamwork, food planning, practical maths, physics, responsibility, and personal development in a real-world setting.

We are an RYA Training Centre and a Duke of Edinburgh approved activity provider. We offer RYA courses in Day Skipper and Competent Crew throughout the year, and we support many young people to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

We can provide voyages during term time, which are offered at a reduced rate. We also offer bursaries to help remove financial barriers.

Safety and support on board

On our voyages, young people are covered by our safeguarding policies, which are available on our website. All skippers are commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmasters, and all adult staff on board are DBS checked.

Young people are continually supervised on board. Trips ashore depend on the maturity of the young people taking part and are planned with safety and suitability in mind.

Support for neurodivergent young people

We welcome neurodivergent young people, and we often find that they thrive at sea with the regular routines, clear expectations, and practical responsibilities of life on board.

Many of the young people who sail with us are neurodivergent. We aim to support them as they develop independence, confidence, and resilience. Parents have told us that young people with social, emotional, and mental health needs have felt well supported and accepted while at sea with us.

Bespoke voyages for home educating families

We can offer bespoke voyages for home education groups. This would begin with a call with our admin team to discuss the aims of the voyage and possible locations, which are dependent on tide and weather. This helps us plan with the skippers and shape the experience around the group. A bespoke voyage could include opportunities for young people to help plan aspects of life on board. For example, participants may assess, select, and allocate food supplies within a budget, create a menu, and send us a food order for the length of the voyage.

Each voyage would have clear aims. Where appropriate, we can arrange for volunteers with the necessary qualifications and experience to be on board to teach areas such as navigation by the stars, coastal geography, and RYA courses.

Young people are given age-appropriate independence and responsibility. This may include helping to run the boat, preparing meals, scheduling meal times around the passage plan, learning passage planning and pilotage, using tide tables and graphs, and applying maths and physics practically through sailing and sail adjustment.

RYA qualifications and future pathways

Morning Star Trust is an accredited RYA Training Centre. We deliver sailing courses such as RYA Competent Crew, which is often the first qualification on the journey towards becoming a skipper.

We invest in young people and provide opportunities for them to build sailing mileage, knowledge, and confidence. Through funding from Trinity House, we are also able to support some young people into maritime careers. We have helped young people go from having no sailing experience to gaining qualifications that can support future work in the maritime industry.

Our Christian foundation

Morning Star Trust is a Christian charity that seeks to share the love of God. We do not seek to force our beliefs on those who sail with us, and we are often commended for our inclusivity.

We welcome young people of no faith, other faiths, and Christian faith. On board, this may look like taking time to talk about what we are grateful for, reflecting on the day, and encouraging deeper questions about faith, life, the universe, and everything.

New residential experiences

Many young people who come to us are new to residential experiences. We are used to supporting young people through this and can provide appropriate pastoral care through trained volunteers.

Bursary support

Morning Star Trust works to remove financial barriers to sailing. We offer bursaries towards the cost of voyages, with applications considered on a case-by-case basis. Bursary support of up to 50% may be available.

Last year, we provided over £10,000 in bursaries to support young people to come to sea with us and gain further RYA qualifications.

Practical details

  • We take young people from age 14 on board.
  • Home educated young people may be able to join existing voyages, and during term time we can also provide bespoke voyages for groups.
  • We have three 11 m vessels and can take 17 people at any one time. Each boat has a skipper and mate provided by us.
  • A five-day term-time voyage costs £550 per young person in term time, with bursary support available.
  • We provide all wet weather kit for young people to wear, in a variety of sizes.

Why sailing works as a learning experience

Sailing is a powerful educational tool because it is immersive, practical, and relational. Young people learn by doing, by working together, and by facing real-world challenges in a safe environment.

They can gain accredited qualifications, build friendships, develop practical skills, and often return home with a renewed sense of confidence and purpose.

For home educating families looking for meaningful, memorable, and practical learning experiences, Morning Star Trust offers young people the chance to step into adventure, discover their strengths, and see the world from a new perspective.
