Music Technology Club: Online music sessions for home-educated teens

Music Technology Club opens new sessions for home ed learners

One of the joys of home education is discovering learning that feels truly alive - the kind that ignites curiosity and confidence. The Music Technology Club, part of Education & Bass, does exactly that. It gives young people the tools to explore music, sound and self-expression - no expensive gear, no rigid rules, just creativity at their fingertips.

The power of learning differently

Education & Bass was founded by Andrew Ferguson — a music producer, DJ and educator with over 30 years of experience. His own story reflects the ethos behind the project: leaving school with no formal qualifications, finding his way back to education through music, and building a global platform that now reaches learners from primary school to university.

At its heart is a belief that non-traditional education can transform lives. Music technology crosses barriers - it engages learners who may not thrive in classrooms and builds confidence through creativity.

Since 2016, Education & Bass has delivered projects in schools, youth programmes, and even prisons. They’ve trained hundreds of teachers, created the world’s largest free online music-tech education library, and built accredited pathways for learners who want recognised qualifications.

New for home educating families

The Music Technology Club is expanding its Home Education Pathway, designed especially for learners aged 11–16 who are educated outside the school system.

The programme begins with a free online taster session - a relaxed, one-hour class where young people can try out music production using free online tools. No prior experience or special equipment is needed - just a computer, headphones and an internet connection.

From there, families can join a five-week course exploring the essentials of music production - from making beats and building melodies to mixing and sound design. It’s a creative, inclusive space where every learner can express themselves and learn at their own pace.

The sessions are run by experienced educators who understand diverse learning needs and styles. What stands out most is the genuine sense of belonging - a community that celebrates different routes into learning, with creativity at its core.

Why this matters

For many home-educating families, finding opportunities that nurture creativity and technical skill can be a challenge. Music Technology Club bridges that gap beautifully. It offers structured, high-quality teaching with the freedom and flexibility home-ed families value most.

And it’s not just about music. It’s about confidence, curiosity and connection - helping young people find their voice and use technology in meaningful, expressive ways.
